Stay open, forever.

Anything is possible. Stay open, forever, so open that it hurts, and then open up some more, until the day you die, world without end, amen.  -George Saunders

I have had teachers throughout my life. Thinking back, it was my second grade teacher, Miss Ozarin, who made the earliest stay-with-me mark when she consistently told us that hard work would be rewarded.

As time has passed, other teachers have come into my life. . . mentors, guides, coaches, and others. Each has shared a special lesson of one kind or another. Each has helped me to learn, and in learning, I have come to define myself.

When we define ourselves, though, we can get stuck. Really stuck. Especially if the definition is comforting. And sometimes when we feel we have no alternatives, or perhaps we feel  set-for-life, the definition sticks to us like a burr. Black and white. Open and shut. And, sometimes, it feels as if there’s no way out.

Peeling back the definition to your core, to a space that’s open and breathing, unwrapping each of the layers, can feel terrifying. And beautiful. And necessary.

Change is not only inevitable, but always happening. When you truly embrace this concept of change being constant, the only thing left to do is grow, detach, venture inwards, touch the spirit and find your source – the one responsible for keeping you grounded through the ever-changing seasons of your life.                 -Julie Weiland
